Childhood Obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years...In 2012, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese.

GroovLings (Est. 2009) is a dance and nutrition education program for youth and adolescents ages 8-14. With an emphasis on Hip Hop dance and performance, GroovLings also provides a 30 minute nutrition lesson after each class to encourage healthy fueling & rehydrating habits throughout class and beyond the studio.   The ”Mindful Mover” curriculum is a 8-12 week program that explores a variety of lessons and activities reguarding food, mindful food practices, and application of what is learned into their homes. How do our bodies react and process food?  Why is water important? How do I read a food label? What do these strange words like Trans Fats, Organic, GMOs, or Monosodium Glutamate mean? How do I navigate a grocery store with my parents? What are some food safety tips? During transition of classes, students will be served a small snack  and a “Try it at Home" recipe each week to encourage and empower independent practice of making meals on their own if no one is home to cook for them. Students are asked to fill out waivers before enrollment, identifying all food allergies etc. While encouraging the youth about movement and wellness, the GroovLings promotes team building and leadership development skills through partner work and group activities and small presentations. We also have fun “Endurance Challenges”every 3 weeks with partners to assess basic push-up, sit-up and jumprope skills.    All curriculum and teaching material is property of GroovLings, which is owned and created by Jennifer Anolin.     NUTRITIONAL IMPORTANCE:  The key to health and wellness, starts with balanced meals in addition to, at least, 30 minutes of physical activity daily. With "Childhood Obesity” still very high, I am concerned that even those children who are physically active are still not eating right. My goal is to take a small step toward a change. Right now, according to the CDC, 1 in 6 youth are overweight/obese in the US.  ( http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/childhood.html ) CHALLENGES: Less time High costs   Convenience   Nutrition Education (energy sources, cooking & farming)   Advancing Technology (video games, tv, internet) etc                                                                             GRANTS: In 2014, the GroovLings received a "Veggie Chase" Grant from NADA (Northern Area Dietetic Association) in efforts to help combat childhood obesity in Northern California.      BRING THE GROOVLINGS INTO YOUR CLASS, STUDIO or CENTER:     Contact: Shinobijaxx@gmail.com
